A CD of music examples is included in the package. For Judy Tarling's book on Baroque Violin Technique see: CMP 487 . For her book on Baroque Dance see: CMP 496 .
No less fascinating is The Weapons of Rhetoric where the structure and composition of Renaissance and Baroque music is analysed according to the ancient rules of rhetoric. Music as conversation, declamation, imitation and animation. 272 pages including many music examples. This book has already become a set text in a number of music colleges and university departments, both in Europe as well as the USA and Brasil. .
Judy Tarling's latest book Handel's Messiah: A Rhetorical Guide is a formidable analysis for both players and listeners to understand how the musical devices of word-painting, repetition, questions and exclamations are used by Handel to create one of the world's masterworks. In addition, there is detailed historical information about the text and the reception of the work during Handel's lifetime, put into the context of contemporary ideas about what constituted the sublime.

Cambridge Consorts : PAVANS and GALLIARDS for 5 viols (or recorders) Score and all part books for viols

Complete: £31.00

Edited and reconstructed by Dr Ian Payne from Brit. Lib. Add MSS 30826-8. This is a substantial and important collection of works by Amner, Gibbons, Tomkins, Weelkes, Wilkinson, Mason, Harding, Peterson, Dethick, Strogers, Jackson, Kirbye, Somner and anon. Many of the composers had connections with Cambridge or at least with East Anglia, and as Dr Payne shows in his erudite introduction, there seems to be a definite connection wth Trinity College for nearly half the pieces. Though the original source is lacking two part-books, the music has been completed with reference to other surviving versions or with skilful reconstruction by the editor. The music continues the tradition established by Dowland's Lachrimae for writing complex counterpoint and harmony within the framework of a dance movement. The standard complete edition comes with parts for viols. Individual part-books are also sold separately (including altermative clefs for recorders: see below).

Score only £12.00.       Part books separately (including treble clef Tenor I & II for recorders): £5.75 each
