VARIATIONS on The Last Rose of Summer by Thomas Chipp (1817)

£7.50

for Piano and Guitar. Thomas Chipp (1793 - 1870) was a celebrated harpist in London and wrote these Variations originally for the harp. This edition is a transcription by Ian Gammie, stylistically following the vogue for piano and guitar duets in the early 19th century - a combination that worked extremely well until the later development of the piano dwarfed the sound of the guitar. If a modern piano is used, the player should be alert to the need to achieve this balance between the instruments. The movements are:

1) - Introduction & Air (Theme). 2) - Andante Espressivo.. 3) – Simplice. 4) – Bolero. 5) - Adagio Espressivo. 6) – Andante. 7) - Con Moto. 8) - Con animato (Finale)

The guitar has extended solo passages in the Bolero and the Adagio Espressivo, and shares thematic material in other movements in addition to the accompagnato passages. Suitable for players of Grade 6 - 7 standard. The whole work lasts approximately 11 minutes.

Text in German, with an English translation given in the Introduction. Ich ging im Walde, Schäfers Klage, Der Musensohn, Ich denke dein, Der Rattenfänger aus Hameln, La Mort de Werther, Nähe des Geliebten. Separate parts for singer and guitarist. The Guitar Songs of Tom Moore, Book 1

£8.50

Moore was known to play the guitar and occasionally accompanied himself when singing his famous Irish Melodies. Apart from The Dream of Home which was published as a guitar song in 1838, these songs are arranged with guitar accompaniment based on the first edition of the ten-volume Irish Melodies (1808-36).  The ten songs are:

The Minstrel Boy (The Moreen). The Meeting of the Waters (The Old Head of Denis). By that lake (The Brown Irish Girl). Oft in the Stilly Night (Scotch Air).

Come Tell me says Rosa (Stevenson / Moore). Dear Harp of my Country (New Langolee). The Dream of Home (Moore, arr. for guitar by C.M.Sola)

Erin! the Tear and the Smile (Aileen Aroon). Fill the Bumper Fair (Bob and Joan). The Time I've lost in Wooing (Pease upon a Trencher).

(The name of the original Irish Air or the composer is given in brackets)

Believe me if all those endearing young charms (My Lodging is on the cold ground). The Young Rose (original melody by Mozart)

We may roam through this world (Garryowen). Fly not yet, 'tis just the hour (Planxty Kelly) Tho' dark are our sorrows (St Patrick's Day)

Ar Hýd y Nôs - Variations for Flute (or Viola) & Guitar,  c.1810

£5.00

An arrangement from a set of 19th century variations for the harp. The original Welsh folksong is known in English as Poor Mary Anne, or rather more widely as the hymn tune All Through the Night.  The composer was C. Neville, an early 19th century harpist about whom little is known apart from his various publications. There are four variations, with the guitar sometimes taking the main melody while the solo instrument weaves around it.  The piece has proved popular in concert performances, and is light and airy in character.

The edition provides a score with separate parts for Flute (in treble clef), also the same part an octave lower in alto clef for Viola, and a Guitar part.

KENNST DU DAS LAND? Five settings of Goethe's famous lyric for voice and guitar. German & English text

£9.50

From these five settings of Goethe's famous lyric from Wilhelm Meister, four are by Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832) and one by Ludwig Abeille (1761-1838). Goethe approved Zelter's settings of his poetry, even above more distinguished composers such as Beethoven and Schubert. Zelter for his part must have been enamoured of this particular lyric (from Wilhelm Meister) because he composed four different versions over a period of 30 years. The setting by Abeille is also a beautiful and sensitive interpretation of the theme of Longing for Italy. The edition has dual text in German nand English, with separate parts for singer and guitarist. .

There is a set of parts for string trio with double bass for those who have a chamber group at their disposal.
